A young man of many talents, Justin was just 20 when he embarked on his journey as a Lazada eCommerce seller. His shop BookEdge Enterprise focuses on books about investing skills. Read on to be inspired by this courageous bookworm’s entrepreneurial spirit.
How old were you when you joined Lazada as a seller and what made you want to become one?
I was 20 when I signed up as a seller. Before that, I only tried marketing my bookstore on social media. Thanks to encouragement from a best friend, who is also a Lazada University senior trainer, my siblings and I decided to join Lazada. They did a great job in setting up the store and I recently took over management tasks.
Have you ever had experience selling before going online to do it? If you came from brick and mortar, what surprised you the most about selling online?
No, I had no experience selling in a physical bookstore before becoming an eCommerce seller. I only tried running social media advertisements to lead customers to my website.
Did you leave a job to open your own business? If yes, what motivated you to take that step?
No, as I am currently a full-time student with a part-time job that I can continue working at even after joining Lazada. A passion for reading motivated me to sell books.
What made you decide to sell in your current category?
I used to love reading on my Kindle. One day when hunting for fresh reading material, I realized that so many books could not be read on Kindles. I felt an urge to buy all the books available in the market! Soon, an idea sparked in my mind to start selling real books. Being a bookseller also allows me to access and read a wider variety of books.
What is the most fulfilling part of being an eCommerce seller now?
What fulfills me the most as an eCommerce seller is the luxury of flexibility. I can choose to work anytime and anywhere I want!
What are some of the most challenging parts of being your own boss?
I am very lucky to be guided and assisted by Lazada University trainers and fellow sellers. Nonetheless, learning from scratch, building discipline with laser focus, and getting things done even though I can’t see immediate results are the toughest parts of being my own boss.
Do you have advice for anyone who might want to be their own boss?
Do not be afraid to start small. Be consistent and treat trials and errors as experiences to learn from. From there, time will do the rest!
What are your three top tips for anyone who wants to succeed in selling online?
I am a fairly new seller on Lazada but I do believe that success and good things take time to develop. Be patient, practice consistency, and stay humble.
